ONE TO ONE WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES

A full days training with a professional wildlife photographer including after course support if required.

Over the years I have delivered numerous courses on many different genres of photography. I understand that people learn in different ways and that learning in small groups just doesn’t work for some people. Personally I have always found that Wildlife Photography needs to be taught on a one to one or at most one to two basis. The subjects you are dealing with often require a certain amount of stealth to approach and this just doesn’t work well with a group. Because of this I now only offer Wildlife photography tuition on a one to one or one to two basis. I open this up to couples as often friends or partners wish to attend togethor.

Because of this approach I am able to tailor the day to each individual attending. Before the course a questionairre needs to be completed so that I can customise the course depending on subjects such as equipment, experience and what you like to photograph. I am also a firm believer in the day progressing at the speed of the attendee, rather than trying to rush through a million topics and leaving you baffled I would much rather concentrate on a few subjects so that by the end of the day it just comes naturally.

LOCATIONS USED FOR THE COURSE

I use a mixture of locations to run courses and these can be decided on taking in a number of factors. Firstly the clients wishes as sometimes they may have particular species they are interested in capturing. A good example of this is for bird photographers who may find it not only instructive but a great day out to visit somewhere like Bempton Cliffs in the breeding season to capture the spectacle of an active sea bird colony. Some locations are only good at certain times of the year or are physically very demanding. This is the case for mountain hare photography as the location is Bleaklow in the Peak District, this location is used January to March but involves five to eight miles of hard walking over difficult terrain. As always locations will be discussed with the client before the course. I have listed some of the sites I use below.

Idle Valley Nature Reserve (Notts), Whisby Nature Reserve (Lincs), Langford Lowfields (RSPB Notts), Pensthorpe Nature Reserve (Norfolk, Extra Cost), Bempton Cliffs (Yorks), Bleaklow (Specialist Mountain Hare, Grouse etc, Derby)

what do i need?

Obviously a digital camera, make and model are not really important. Lens wise, ideally for this course you will need a minimum of a 300mm Lens, however something 400mm or above is ideal dependant on the subject. With regard to other equipment a tripod is good to have but I can supply one of these and a means of attaching your camera/lens if required. I do go through kit questions on the questionnaire but if your unsure please drop me an email or give me a call and we can usually sort something out.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER

In some respects this is up to the client.

However, with more than twenty years experience as a wildlife photographer I will be able to guide you along the path to becoming a more successful wildlife photographer whatever level you are starting at from beginner to more experienced.

Subjects I include in the course include gaining the correct exposure, chosing the right shutter speed, ISO what is it and how do we use it. White balance, depth of field, how to compose a shot and how to use the light to turn a good shot into a great one. We will also look at how to get close to your subject in the first place or even know its there through the use of field craft and field signs.

This is just a very small sample of what can be covered during the day and as I say all very much tailored to every individual client.

Included in the cost of this course is a thirty minute zoom call after the completion of the course should you require it to cover any of those questions that can pop up after the day!

Cost for a days Tuition

A days full tuition on this course cost £185.   A popular option is to double up with a friend or loved one. A full days tuition on a one to Two basis cost £245

I know that after a course is completed you often have additional questions that you forgot to ask on the day. As well as providing comprehensive notes on the subjects we covered emailed to you after the course I am also available to answer any questions in the future. Just drop me an email or facebook message and I will get back to you, hopefully with an answer!
