BOOK BELOW

During the breeding season Bempton Cliffs on the Yorkshire coast comes alive to the sound of hundreds of thousands of breeding sea birds. Birds nesting at the site include Gannets, an impressive bird that can be seen soaring around the cliff side as well as hugging there favored nest spot they defend from intruders vigorously. The diminutive puffin also nest here with there impressive colouring and ability to collect huge beak fulls of sand eels. Sprinkled across the cliffs are large numbers of Razorbill, Guillemot, kittiwake and fulmar.

I consider this a fantastic spot for all photographers but particularly beginners as although some techniques will be quite advanced you have endless possibilities to practice the techniques with countless subjects, something that can’t always be guaranteed with other subjects in the wildlife genre.

WHAT WE WILL COVER

As with all my courses I try to tailor the day to each individual taking the course. I will send out a short questionnaire before the day to enable me to do this. Below is an idea of some of the subjects we will cover.

  • Light and dealing with differing light conditions

  • Composition

  • Isolating your subject (using the foreground and background)

  • How to chose the right camera and lens combination

  • What settings should I use? Autofocus, aperture, ISO etc

  • Getting creative with settings to move your shot away from the normal

  • Exposure and learning when my camera will be fooled and what to do about it!

WHAT YOU NEED

Ideally you will need a digital camera with at least a 300mm lens, however a lens of 400mm plus is preferable to enable you to get the full range of images available at this location.

WHEN DOES THE COURSE START?

Again I will tailor this to each individual taking the course. It is great to be able to shoot in the dawn light but this can mean very early starts in the spring and summer months. I know from experience that some clients will get accommodation close to the site so that we can make an early start while others may have a long drive to get there which make a five am start difficult. Sometimes a later start can be made to allow us to make use of the light as the sun sets in the west. This will be discussed with you before the day and your preference agreed. Because I only organise these days on a 1-2-1 basis it is easier to re-arrange a day if for instance very bad weather is forecast (torrential rain or high winds for instance) Again, this will be discussed with the client.

AFTER THE COURSE.

I email individual notes to my clients after the course because as it is tailor made for each client generic notes don’t really work! This may take a couple of days to get through to you after the day via email. I also provide a facility to arrange a zoom call after the day. I have found over the years that often there can be a few questions you forgot to ask on the day and these calls are great for clearing up those last few points. All you need to do is drop me an email and we can arrange a time.
